On April 23, 2010, Houston Arts Alliance mourned the sudden passing of a dear friend and colleague Elizabeth Alexander.
Liz Alexander's twelve-year tenure at HAA began in 1998 as an intern in the Civic Art + Design department. She later shifted to the Grants Department as Grants Coordinator. She interacted daily with many artists and arts organizations and was instrumental in finding and implementing the transition to HAA’s online grant application process.
Houston arts organizations developed and grew with her assistance, and many executive directors, artistic directors and independent artists have testified that Liz was always available to answer questions, make processes clear and encourage artists to pursue their missions.
Her extensive knowledge of the Houston arts community could only be matched by her genuine love for her work. A talented visual artist and photographer in her own right, Liz was rarely seen at events without her camera. In addition, she remained an outspoken advocate for the rights of women and minorities in our community.
Annise D. Parker, Mayor of the City of Houston, in appreciation of her service to the City, proclaimed April 27, 2010, in Memoriam, as Liz Alexander Day in Houston. Liz was preceded in death by her father Dalton Alexander and is survived by her mother Gloria, a large extended family, and her beloved dog, Major.
