Koryn Rolstad’s Sheltering Growth.

Houston Arts Alliance dedicating two new pieces

The Houston Arts Alliance is pleased to announce that Koryn Rolstad’s Sheltering Growth will be dedicated on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 10 a.m. at the Northeast Multi-Service Center, located at 9720 Spaulding.

Rolstad’s installation, contracted by Houston Arts Alliance for the City of Houston features a sculptural brushed aluminum tree that grows upward along the brick wall of the lobby. The tree spreads out into rings that encompass vine-like branches, festooned with cascading leaves. Above the glass entrance doors are ten graphic panels depicting natural scenes of the community, accompanied by Herman Melville’s quote, “We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men.” This passage was specifically chosen by members of the community.

This project was inspired by the building’s placement in Tidwell park, as well as by the notion of the community being a temple for growth, stability and support. District B City Council Member Jarvis Johnson will dedicate this new addition to the City of Houston’s Civic Art collection, which holds 400+ works.

The Houston Arts Alliance will also dedicate Tim Glover’s Community Tree on Tuesday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. at the Acres Homes Community Center, located at 6719 W. Montgomery Road. The Artists Neighborhood Project is a program for Houston artists to create work within the context of the city’s diverse neighborhoods.

Tim Glover, a Houstonian since 1986, created Community Tree, a steel tree conveying the idea of rural beauty, longevity and symbolizing the generations of families that comprise the Acres Homes community. The scale of the proposed sculpture is 15 feet high x 5 feet wide x 5.5 feet deep.

"My concept centers on the importance of community history and identity," states Glover. "My sculpture, Community Tree, represents the rural beauty of the Acres Homes Community with three primary elements: the Tree, the Home, and the Boundary that defines Acres Homes."

This project truly celebrates the Acres Homes neighborhood. City of Houston District B will be home to this temporary work until November 2011.
