Houston Chronicle Opinion
by Robert L. Lynch and Joseph C. Dilg
We know that Houston is recognized worldwide for its energy industry - particularly for oil and natural gas - as well as for biomedical research, aeronautics, technology and international trade. But what may come as a surprise is Houston's other economic powerhouse: the arts industry.
Fifth Ward Jam by Houston Artists Dan Havel and Dean Ruck opened in October 2011 on historic Lyons Avenue. Funded by Houston Arts Alliance through the Artist in Neighborhood Grant Program, the goal was to forge collaboration between artists and neighborhoods to create temporary public art that promotes a greater awareness of a neighborhood's history. Jam takes its inspiration from the many jam sessions associated with the musical history that evolved from that neighborhood’s Zydeco, blues, R&B, soul, and hip hop communities. Havel and Ruck turned a dilapidated old row house into a venue to continue those traditions in partnership with Fifth Ward Community RedevelopmentCorporation. Houston Arts Alliance – transforming the Houston stage in surprising ways.
