It All Starts Here

Liz Alexander was always someone I looked forward to working with, either on a grant review panel or as a grant recipient. She is missed!

Kim Lykins
Executive Director, Texas Foundation for the Arts

Liz was always there for us in preparing for and presenting our grant requests. No question seemed trivial to her even though we are sure she got the same one hundreds of times.  She was patient and always willing to help make our process easier.   Year after year she was the steady, knowledgeable person that watched us grow and always acknowledged our accomplishments.

Executive Director, Houston Metropolitan Dance Company & Center

Liz Alexander was friendly, unpretentious, open and especially encouraging to emerging artists and artists from non-traditional art backgrounds.  I found her to be a breath of fresh air in the Houston art world.  Her strong voice and her commitment to fostering art production and artists' development are sorely missed.

MECA remembers Liz Alexander for the generous humor with which she assisted us whenever we had any kind of question.  She was always kind and attentive, and her passing was a great loss for HAA and the many arts organizations of Houston.  We did not learn that she was such an excellent artist until after her death, when we hosted a traditional ofrenda in her honor and displayed some of her pieces.  Liz’s caring and considerate spirit lives on through her art, her reputation and now this scholarship.

Alice Valdez
Executive Director, Multicultural Education and Counseling through the Arts (MECA)

I met Liz more than a decade ago. I had just received a personal arts award through HAA - then CACHH. When I went over to Allen Parkway to sign all the necessary papers, I met with Liz, a warm, approachable woman with a sly sense of humor. And then, as Voices Breaking Boundaries evolved, I also worked with Liz as an arts administrator. Over the past decade, I got to know her as a fellow artist, activist and community member.

I was always moved by her empathy, integrity, and her ability to share resources while always remaining professional. ... A year later, I still find it difficult to process the loss. Liz brought much love and laughter to Houston's arts community and she continues to be missed. I am glad her family shared an image of her for Voices Breaking Boundaries' art car. She is someone who will remain with me -- and all of us -- for a long time.

Liz Alexander was pivotal in providing young professionals in the arts, culture and academic fields the opportunity to participate in decision-making processes in the arts arena.  Ms. Alexander was an activist in the arts, being an artist herself she understood the value and need of many arts groups and organizations in Houston.  As a result, she mentored many aspiring and established artists in the process of grant writing and this helped them gain confidence in their work and in their craft.  Ms. Alexander is greatly missed because her leadership in the art world in Houston is incomparable.
