FAQs

Who is eligible for a grant?

  • It is always advisable to read the specific guidelines for each grant program as they differ on types of organizations who may apply as well as the size of the grant. All organizations that apply must be not-for-profit corporations who are recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as public charity and have a federal identification number assigned. Non-profit City of Houston arts organizations must have had their 501 (c) (3) status for one full year. Individual artists must have have been residents of Houston for two full years.

Where does the grant money come from?

  • Funding for grant programs comes from a variety of sources and often carries restrictions. For example, funding for Arts Project Grants and Operating Support grants comes from City of Houston Hotel Occupancy Tax funds and is restricted to City of Houston physically based not-for-profit organizations. In all cases, an applicant should read the grant guidelines carefully before submitting.

Does HAA give grants to students?

  • HAA does not offer grants to currently registered students and many of its programs cannot be used for in-school, after-school or arts-in-education programs due to the restrictions of the funding source.
