2011 was a great year for the City of Houston and the Civic Art & Design team as we saw several artworks completed throughout the city. We are all looking forward to another great year in 2012.
The beautifully restored Central Permitting Building is home to several artworks completed by various Houston artists. Elaine Bradford’s whimsical ceiling installation in the Vinson Neighborhood Library is sure to delight and inspire for years to come. Thirty-five historical images and one twenty-foot tall sculpture were created by Gordon Huether for the Midwest Patrol Station. A mosaic memorial now honors those who fought in WWII at the Veteran’s Memorial Park, appropriately titled Absolute Victory by Rosalinda R. Toro.
Additionally temporary artworks and programs came to a conclusion in 2011. The Buffalo Bayou Invasive Plant Eradication Unit created by Mark Dion is now waging war along the Buffalo Bayou. The first round of the new Portable on Demand Artwork (PODA) program was a huge success! Eight different PODS traveled throughout Houston to various Neighborhood Centers, Libraries, Festivals and Universities. Keep an eye out for the next round of PODA to hit the streets fall of 2012.
